Deciding to Set Up An Online Business

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Deciding to set up an online business is a major decision, but one that can positively affect your financial future and your life. You probably already know that online businesses have many advantages: there is virtually no cap on salary or earnings, you can easily work from home or from your favorite coffee shop. Plus, by working to develop your own online business you are working to develop your own assets and company, without having to answer to a boss. With an online business, you decide what you wish to do in your life and you have the opportunity to pursue your dreams.

However, before you decide to launch your own business, you will want to make sure that you have the temperament for the venture and are prepared for all that an online business entails. Before you launch your business, for example, consider:

1) How much time can I devote to this business? While you can certainly start a small business on the side using just a few spare hours a week, if you want to make a full-time income you will have to devote quite a bit of time to your business, especially at the beginning. If you have a busy work life, social life, and are taking care of immigration issues such as USCIS green card replacement, consider when you might be able to schedule in time for your online business. Are there activities that you can give up in order to devote to your new business? Try to develop a schedule that commits you to working on your online business for a few specific hours per week.

2) What can I bring to this business? Consider what skills, products, and what type of enthusiasm you can bring to your Internet company or endeavor. In order to stand out from all the other companies online, you’ll need to be able to offer something special. Maybe you have a gift for marketing, have a special area of expertise that you can share online, or have a unique product that can change people’s lives. Make sure, however, that you have something to offer. Create a list of what you can offer and a list of resources you can access to make your business succeed.

4) Do I have a solid plan? Online businesses don’t just usually succeed by themselves. They’re usually backed by a very sound marketing plan, business plan, and financial investment. Make sure that you have the resources in place to launch a business successfully, and make sure that you understand marketing and are able to promote your business successfully online. Have a written step-by-step plan for making your business succeed. If you need help developing such a plan, there are many online resources and many books at your library that can help you get started.

You Don’t Need a Product Online to Make Money

Friday, April 24th, 2009

If you have been laid off and you need to find a way to make additional money then there are many ways you can make use of the web to be successful.  Many people think that you need to have a business established to have an online presence.  This is not the case.  You don’t even need to have a product when you have an online business.

One if the great things about the web is that you don’t even need to have a business license.  If you currently sell prelit Christmas trees on the street then you will need to have a business license through the local town in order to operate.  If any one comes and asks to see it then you will need to have the license available so you can sell artificial Christmas trees locally.  When you have a presence on the web you don’t have to have a business license to sell white Christmas trees.  Plus, there is no one to ask you to see it either.  You can have any type of business that you would like to online and you are not required to have a business license to run it.

An excellent thing about an online business is that you don’t even need a product to actually make money.  Many companies online make money by offering a service.  They don’t offer a product that they will ship to you but they offer services.  If you have a skill or something that you are good at doing then you can offer this skill.  These are considered to be intangible items that you can sell.  You may be good at building websites or have an ability to design logos creatively.  You may even be a good landscaper.  You can go online and make money without selling a product or a service.

Another way that businesses online make money without selling a product is by offering to connect people together as a networking site.  Affiliate sites don’t have a product but the service is to list products, reviews on products, and to provide links to these products so users can make a purchase.  The way that the business makes money is by when the shopper makes a purchase from the affiliate site the site owner makes a commission.  Affiliate sites actually make a lot of money.  The great thing about this type of business is that it provides a passive income and this type of service doesn’t require any work once the site is built and running.

If you are suffering due to the economy you should think about spending the time to build a website and get online.  You can make a lot of money online with your own business and you don’t even need a product to sell.  You can offer services or even build an affiliate site.  Getting an online business up and running can happen as quickly as in a day.  An online business doesn’t require 40 hours a week and it can provide a supplemental income or a full time income.

Mistakes People Make with Their Online Business

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

There are many mistakes that people make with their online business.  These mistakes cause people to fail online and shut down.  These types of mistakes include problems with your site, using keywords improperly, and not advertising.

There are millions of companies that fail online annually but they don’t have to shut down.  The problem is that they don’t realize what it was that they did wrong.  They just assume that an online business is impossible so they give up and take down their site.  In most cases of online failure the mistakes that companies make are extremely simple and easy fixes that can be resolved at a very low cost.

The biggest problem that companies do with their site is building something that is not attractive or properly functional.  This is common with a business of any sort.  For example, a business may sell products like artificial Christmas trees.  If the visitors of the site cannot instantly recognize that is the purpose of the site they will not stick around.  The customer needs to recognize the purpose of the site is to sell Christmas trees and it also needs to be easy to click through and make purchases.  If the link to purchase lighted palm trees is broken then you won’t sell any of them.  Companies have broken links all of the time that cause them to make no sales and they never pay enough attention to their online business to know if the functionality was the case.

Additional problems that cause businesses to fail include improperly making use of keywords.  Keywords are beneficial for many reasons that include giving you a good rank with the search engines, listing you appropriately with the products and services that you offer, and much more.  Using the wrong keywords will cause you to be listed with user searches that have nothing to do with the products and services that you offer.  Not using enough keywords on the web pages of a site will cause a business not to be listed at a good enough ranking.  If you use too many keywords on a site in an unnatural fashion just to give you a good ranking then you will be blacklisted from the search engines.  You must make proper use of keywords on a company site.

Another thing that many companies don’t do is advertise.  They expect that they can rely on their current customers and even their friends and family members to provide advertising for their business.  This never works and isn’t enough to keep a business going.  You must provide advertising techniques and have an advertising campaign to brand your business so you are well known and have a credible reputation.

An online business can be successful but there are many things that people do to cause them to fail and they never recognize it at all.  Closing the doors to an online business is silly.  The most common mistakes that people make with their company site include having poor functionality, not being attractive, improperly using keywords, and not using advertising techniques.
